From Homeless to Olympian: Bill Schuffenhauer

Many people have been strongly protesting Vancouver’s 2010 Games, but the Olympics – for all of its cost and spectacle – does offer some wonderful and courageous stories.

Bill Schuffenhauer’s parents were hardcore drug addicts. He spent much of his adolescence living on the streets or bouncing around foster homes. He stole to eat, he drank to forget.

Finding a network of support, he gave school another shot and found athletics as a way to leave his life on the streets behind. From a talent in running, to track and field, Billy is now an Olympic athlete representing the USA and is competing in the four-man Bobsleigh.
